From Head to Toe

Reader Response: With detailed drawings and a humorous approach to the human body, this was a an entertaining read. It moved quickly but had labeled diagrams and descriptions of the parts of the body that were helpful in order to comprehend the body as a perfect machine. It also provided additional information about the various parts of the body and organ systems that made the reading experience additionally interesting and entertaining.

Evaluator Response: The strengths of this text are the diagrams that correspond to the writing and help to provide labeled visual representations. The weakness of this text is that it has great information but is written at a third to fifth grade level. It draws the interest of more third and fourth graders than fifth. Possibly including some differentiated sections would strengthen the text.

Teacher Response: This is a great text to supplement a unit on the human body. The visuals and the text that goes along with them is extremely helpful for student comprehension. Other texts I would recommend to students who enjoyed this book would be Alive: The Living Breathing Human Body Book. This book covers the organ systems and individual organs of the human body in a more matter of fact way that can take a student's initial interest to a deeper and higher level.

Literacy Coach Response: This is a great text to supplement a unit on the human body. I would also recommend the website ck12.org. This website has much more high level information on the human body and will be able to target the additional interests of readers. The website caters to an older group, middle school and lower high school, but goes into more depth and provides additional activities and videos for students.

  1. This book looks awesome! I was shocked how little my students knew about the human body when I taught them that unit. Having an interactive text would've been a great tool to use in my classroom when I taught this unit. I also like how you mentioned that this book uses humor. When teaching a subject that students may not be very interested in, humor is ideal in order to keep students engaged. Even though you stated that this book is geared to 3rd-5th graders, I still think it would be a great tool for my 7th grade classroom, especially for my lower readers.
